Where Can I Buy Dehydrated Food?

It’s never been easier to buy dehydrated food. Stroll the aisles of any large grocery store and you’ll find plenty of inexpensive dried foods that can be bought in large quantities (especially in a members-oriented case lots retailer) for relatively little money. In recent years, many major retailers have set up special niche sections catering to the large and growing “prepper” market, where you can buy dehydrated food of many kinds, as well as a wide variety of other supplies.

The real question here is this: It is wiser to buy dehydrated food, or to prepare your own? Either option will cost at least a little bit of money. If you grow your own produce, and have access to a dehydrator or a common freezer, you should be able to avoid paying the cost incurred if you buy dehydrated food by preserving your own home grown food through freeze drying.

To prepare dehydrated food of your own, a good food processor or a really sharp set of knives will come in handy. For freeze-drying, slicing veggies or fruits – such as pears, potatoes, tomatoes, or carrots – very thin will be the best approach. Be aware that many foods, particularly potatoes and fruits such as apples and pears, tend to oxidize very quickly, and the discoloration isn’t all that attractive – so move quickly once the slicing has begun, and make sure you freeze dry the food you’ve selected right away.

After arraying slices on a metal tray – such as a cookie sheet, or better yet, a perforated tray – place them in a clean, roomy freezer compartment. It’s important that the freezer you use is clean, so that the food you freeze dry won’t be tainted by vagrant odors. Typically, thin-sliced food will be frozen solid within a half-hour, but you’ll want to let it remain in the freezer for several days – or even up to a week.

Once the food is thoroughly frozen and all moisture has been removed from it, remove it from the tray and store in airtight bags or containers. This is among the most economical ways to build an emergency dehydrated food supply.
